A voice in the night: the story of Michel

Michael Ayoub, a Christian, is a musaharati: every night during Ramadan, he chants and beats his tambourine to wake up the believers of the old city of Acre.

It is in the middle of the night, that the narrow streets of the old city of Akko, the San Giovanni of Acre Crusade, resonate alongside of the echo of the sea, with the sweet notes that come from a tambourine and the voice of a young Arab, Michel Ayoub.

A character of a lost ancient tradition, supplanted by alarm clocks and smartphones, that of MUSAHARATI is a rare figure to meet. During the Ramadan nights, in fact, he is the one who walks through the streets of the Muslim neighborhood long before dawn to wake up the believers, so that they can eat their meal before the day lights bring the obligation of the fasting ritual.
